Aggie Game Day!

Yesterday we took the boys to the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas featuring our favorite Texas Aggies. This is the first game the entire family has been to in two years. Tickets to home games have gotten incredibly expensive, and well, we're cheap. Occasionally Kyle will break down and buy two tickets, thinking he'll take me. But, I don't really care about football. I try. Really, I do. I try to pay attention to the game. It's just that 99% of the time is is so. damn. boring. Therefore, I find that I spend most of my time at games mentally making fun other women's game day attire, or dreaming about snack-bar nachos that I'm too cheap to buy, or watching the seconds on the clock s l o w l y tick by. I'd rather spend 4+ hours on a Saturday doing something fun.

Like sewing.

or running.

The tickets to the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas were affordable, and we knew the climate-controlled Reliant Stadium would be good for the kids, so we got four tickets, plus tickets for Gerri and Tom. The night before the game we drove down to GrandTom's house. After dropping us off at the house, Kyle went to Kroger to stock up on tailgating supplies. You know, because tailgating in preparation for an 11:00 game is serious business. I, meanwhile, went to sleep because I knew that my 7 am wake-up call would come tooooo early.

Aside from being snarky about attire, envious of other's nachos, and waiting for time to pass, my other favorite way to spend a football game is by playing with my camera.  Yesterday, I started early, before we even left the house:

Why do boys CONSTANTLY have to wrestle? Why can't they just leave each other alone? The little weirdos!

Like this. MUCH better.

Have I mentioned before that Braden LOVES posing for pictures?
It was a foggy morning, like many mornings on the Gulf Coast in December. (or January. or June. Or August...). But did the fog stop us? Heck no.

See? Tailgating is serious business. Shiner Bock in a can at 9:30 in the morning.
The boys repeatedly declared it the "best tailgate EVER." This made me really sad because our little tailgate was a kinda pathetic (even if it did have beer).  Kyle had bought them Fruit Roll-Ups and Pringles, two things they really love but don't ever get to have. The boys did the natural thing with the Pringles and made faces:

Meanwhile, my fun-loving husband did lots of this:
At one point, Garrett said, "We're all tailgating and Daddy's just talking on the phone."  It turns out that he was talking to his old college roommate and BFF, Michael, who was on the other side of the stadium with a few other friends. I wish we'd figured that out earlier so that we all could have met up.

I took about thirty pictures of this cute toothless guy, to the point that he wouldn't look at me anymore when I called his name.

Once those front teeth come in, I know he's going to look awkward until he's about 17. For now, he's just sooooo darn cute!
Then, we walked up to the stadium. How cute are their little behinds?

Whose kids are these?

...because these cute ones are surely mine.

When we got to our seats, Gerri and Tom were already there. Gerri is Tom's special friend, and we really, really like her. She's great for Tom and great for us and a REALLY big Aggie fan. She's a widow, and her late husband was an Aggie, as are both of her daughters.

I should have changed the aperture before I took this pic. Sorry you are blurry, Kyle and Braden! Tom, you sure look good!
A friendly mom near us offered to take a pic of the entire group. I wish I had turned the flash on first! It's hard to take a backlit picture without one.

We had time to kill (and no tacky outfits or nachos to ogle over), so I took even more pictures.

Finally, the Aggies take the field!

I  L O V E  T H I S  P I C T U R E!!

Braden really likes watching the game.

Halftime! Yay! My favorite part of the game!!

Another pic of Gerri and Tom.

Another picture of my toothless boy.

Garrett, pretending for half a second to watch the game (he's kinda like his momma).

Oh wait! ANOTHER picture of my toothless boy!

In the fourth quarter, I was hungry, so I wandered to check out the prices at the snack bar. $9 for the nachos and $7 for a beer. That is robbery.  Thankfully, we had bean/queso dip and chips and beer in the car, and the Aggies were SURELY going to win, so the boys and I left.

But first, they ran around the little park between Reliant and the Astrodome.  I tried to tell them about the Astrodome and how it was the 8th wonder of the world and how awesome it was and Nolan Ryan and they just looked at me like I was crazy.

Then, we did even more tailgating. And picture taking.

Kyle finally showed up, and we made the great decision to just wait for the traffic to clear.

And there you go. A day full of family, football, fotos, food, and fun (and a beer or two).

First hunting trip

This past weekend we took our boys on their first hunting trip. Last year, Kyle didn't have a lease (and moped all winter long), and before that he didn't have a "family friendly" lease. I suggested that this year he find a place where we could all go, and thankfully, he did. So, we bought a travel trailer for the whole family. He built a two-man deer stand so he and a boy could sit in it. We bought my friend Sara's old Suzuki Samurai (she drove it in high school, and her husband had been using it at their deer lease).  We were ready! On the day after Thanksgiving, we were off.

Unfortunately, so was the rest of the state of Texas.  The drive took forever. The traffic was SO bad. It was not. fun. at. all.

We stopped for a late lunch in Luling (side note: I'm glad my kids love the decorated pump jacks in Luling as much as I did when I was a kid).

Here's Garrett enjoying a "cheese hamburger" at the DQ (and Kyle enjoying me taking pictures in the Dairy Queen).
In fact, Garrett enjoyed his cheese hamburger so much that he got to enjoy an ice cream sandwich (free with kids meal!).
Braden did NOT enjoy his popcorn chicken. In fact, he did NOT enjoy it so much that he did NOT enjoy NOT getting an ice cream sandwich.

Several hours later, as we were nearing the deer lease, I was getting antsy. Here's Kyle enjoying me taking pictures of him driving:
And here's a tanker truck pulling out in front of us. Kyle does NOT enjoy it when people drive like this, and he lets us all know it.

This kid is possessed.

And here's the other one. The face tattoos? Yeah, he put those on before the Ags sucked it up Thursday night.

The turn off to the ranch. Looks promising, huh?

Camp is a mile and half down this road (I know that because I ran it a couple of times the next day).

The pictures of the actual camp are on another blog post. Let me just say that it is the ugliest place in all of Texas, and I do realize that it saying quite a bit.

As soon as we got to the camp, Braden and Kyle got ready to hunt. Here's Braden sporting his new camo jacket, new camo hat, and new camo boots.
Here he is in the 'zuki. He said, "This is what I'm going to look like when I'm 16!"  (oh, Lord, help me!)

And they're off!

Kyle said Braden did pretty well. Braden said he got really hungry.  Kyle saw two deer; Braden saw three. Interesting.

The best part of this deer lease is that it is family friendly, as in, there was another family there! With kids our kids age! Score! They are pretty outdoorsy, and their kids have been hunting since they were babies. Megan, the cutie in pink with the awesome blond curls, has a pink Crickett .22 rifle and all the kids took turns shooting it under the watchful eye of the dads (that's Gene in the camo pants and Dalton to his right).

I've always thought that Braden's intensity and super-concentration would lend itself well to shooting sports. It turns out that I was right: he missed his first shot, but nailed every one after that. Summer Olympics 2024, here we come!

Garrett? Not so good. He had a hard time holding the gun steady.

That night, it was Garrett's turn to hunt.

Do the jacket and shoes look familiar? Yep, same ones. We're cheap like that.  The hat, however, is all Garrett's.

I told Garrett to quit smiling and look like a serious deer hunter:

Still looking serious. This pic was preceded by a momentary snarl on Garrett's part. It was awesome.

Also, how much do these two look alike?
Kyle said Garrett was great in the deer stand. Garrett also fell asleep, and that might be why. He also ate two of the Oreos I'd packed for him, but Kyle said he chewed them very, very slowly, just like a good deer hunter.

Here's our home-away-from-home.

While Kyle was puttering around with last minute tasks before we left, I thought I needed a picture of me just to prove I was actually there (and I also wanted to play with the self-timing function on the camera). Before this picture, I actually thought I looked kinda cute in a comfy way. It turns out that sweatpants are NOT cute. Yikes!
Then, I made the whole family (including the damn dog) take a pic, but I carefully hid the sweatpants.

All in all, it was a good weekend: we enjoyed each others' company, no deer were killed, very little baths were taken (except for me: I took three showers), new friends were met. We're all looking forward to next time.

We are Thankful for our Neighbors

Garrett had his first school performance yesterday, and it was awesome!  He had been practicing his dance for about two weeks at home, and the night before the program, he carefully laid out his white shirt and blue jeans and black shoes.

The morning of the performance, I woke him up and said, "Garrett...time to get dressed for your performance."

Without even opening his eyes he broke into a huge grin and said, "I love today!"

He's part of the dual language program, and his dance was the part of the program called "We are Thankful for our Neighbors." It was to a mariachi song--not quite the Mexican Hat Dance, but I don't know what it was. I loved the pretty skirts on the girls, and I would have loved to twirl around in one if I was a 6 year old. Heck, I'd love to do that now!

Garrett took his role very seriously. He was front and center with his partner, Margarita.  Several times he re-positioned her, and that cracked me up.

In this part, the boys are standing, marching to the beat, while the girls were twirling around them.  Garrett is SO serious! Love that kid!!

Book character dress up day

On the Friday before Halloween, the kids' school had "Book Character Dress Up Day." While I think this is a way for the school to allow kids to dress up for Halloween without really allowing them to dress up for Halloween, this mean ol' mama would NOT let her kids wear their Halloween costumes, partly because they weren't really book characters, and partly because I didn't want the little knuckleheads to mess them up.

So, I thought and thought and came up with a pretty cool (and cheap!) costume idea: they both went as Merlin, the magician from the King Arthur legends.  It just so happens that Braden had recently read about Merlin in a book about knights and castles, so he totally bought into the costume. Then, once Garrett heard about it, he too wanted to be Merlin.

I bought two $.49 black posterboards from Kroger and a $2.49 glitter paint set.  We cut the posterboard into a pie-shaped wedge, painted stars and a moon, then rolled it into a cone. I added the "Merlin" just in case the other second-graders couldn't tell who he was (kindergartners can't really read, so Garrett just got an M, plus I did Garrett's first and didn't really think about adding the entire name).

I cut a beard shape out of quilt batting then stapled it to the hat and cut a mouth hole. For Braden's, I pulled apart cotton balls into strands and spray-glued those on the beard.

Garrett didn't want the cotton balls on his beard, and I don't think his looks as good as Braden's.

I borrowed the graduation gowns from the stash of them at school (the teachers wear them at graduation every May). I used a long stitch length to baste the bottoms of the gowns up, and then basted the "new" bottom hem.  These stitches easily pulled out the next day so that I could return the gowns.

So, for $3.50, some time, and some supplies from around the house (and school), my kids had original costumes for book character dress up day!

Seeing Granddaddy

My children are blessed to have many, many people who love them.  One of those special people is my Dad, their Granddaddy. He lives in Falls Church, VA (for at least the next few months until he moves to his dream retirement property in Rockbridge County, VA).  My kids only see him once or twice a year, and they LOVE him.  I absolutely love how much they love him. It warms my heart to no end to see the love expressed between my kids and my dad.

I just happened to have my camera with me on Saturday morning when Garrett saw his Granddaddy for the first time since...well, I can't remember.  Dad flew in to Houston for my little sis Katie's big Homecoming weekend, and he woke up very early Saturday morning to drive up for some soccer games.  He met us at the field, but had parked across the lot from us.

Garrett saw him walking towards us, and asked if he could run to Granddaddy. As quick as I could, I pulled out the camera:

LOVE IT!!!!

Garrett's last day of daycare--from May

My sweet Garrett starts kindergarten in less than 48 hours.  He's spent the summer home with me, but in May we took some pictures at his final his final day of daycare. He's had several childcare places in his life, but Southwood Learning Center is probably the most significant.  From months 4 to 13, he stayed with a wonderful lady just down the road from the high school where I taught in Oklahoma.  Actually, now that I think about it, she was pretty significant, too. From months 16 to 18, he alternated between my friend Amie Corley, who was staying home at the time, and Robbie Rutherford, Tiffany's retired mom.  The day he turned 18 months, he started at Southwood Learning Center, where big brother Braden was already going.  He was such a little guy! He could hardly walk, and I thought he was going to get stomped over and eaten up by the big kids on the playground. Last May, he WAS a big kid.

Check out how proud he looks here:
Almost every day of the last two years, he measured his growth by trying to reach over the little half door on the way out.  In the last month there, he finally made it.

I'm incredibly thankful to the staff at SWLC for taking such good care of my little boys.  Both have such a desire for learning. They seek out patterns and problem solve, and, most impressive to me, they read! I think the Montessori curriculum and the loving guidance of their teachers is totally responsible--it certainly isn't anything we've done with them at home.
Here's Garrett acting, well, like Garrett!

I've recommended this place to pretty much everyone I know.  I always say that it isn't the newest, fanciest daycare out there, but the staff is amazing.  As a Montessori school, the kids aren't provided with plastic playthings. They use their creativity and invent games. They dress up (Garrett like to pretend he was a ghost while wearing the princess costume!).  Nazneen, the owner, and both Lindas who served as directors during the 4 years the kids were there, became good friends of mine.  I've recommended some of the boys teachers for elementary teaching positions, and if I were a principal, I'd hire them in a heartbeat.

Here's Garrett showing off his classroom. The Montessori lessons are on the shelves around the room. Garrett even came to child development class last year to demonstrate them. He could solve puzzles that stumped my high schoolers! Garrett spent two years in this room, and Braden was in there the year before that.  It will be strange not taking a kid there this year!

Here's Garrett's class.

And here's my little guy.  I'm so proud of him that my heart could burst, and I wish him lots of luck on Monday in kindergarten!!
